A medieval defensive tower nicknamed the 'Tower of the Moors,' standing near the Romanesque church of Sant Romà de les Bons, in Encamp — despite the legend, of Christian origin.
Castell de les Bons, better known as Torre dels Moros ('Tower of the Moors'), stands in the hamlet of Les Bons, in the parish of Encamp, right next to the 12th-century Romanesque church of Sant Romà de les Bons. Despite its popular name suggesting a Moorish origin, historians agree the tower is in fact of Christian origin, likely built after the 13th century for defensive purposes, though the exact circumstances of its construction remain poorly documented. The structure retains characteristic features of medieval military architecture, including arrow slits and machicolations designed to defend its approaches. Part of the broader Les Bons heritage ensemble, which also includes the Romanesque church and its cemetery, the site has been proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status for the outstanding value of its rural and defensive Pyrenean architecture, today among the best preserved in Andorra.
